Welcome to Unwrapped, the B corp spotlight series where we invite people from B corp brands to answer some of the most frequently asked b corp questions. I'm Katie, your host. And tonight, I'm pleased to welcome Brad Handel from Everyman Jack. It's great to have you here, Brad.

Yeah. Hello. Thanks for having me. This is exciting.

Good. So today, Brad, you have kindly volunteered to answer the question, how to get b corp certified?

Brad Handel [00:00:28]:

I chose a small one. Yeah. So that's what I've been. Yeah. I can really speak for for our experience, but it was a process that took at least a year, if not more of planning and really going through the 5 main areas and seeing, you know, where we need to make improvements, what, you know, we can start doing, stop doing, and continue doing to really reach that goal score of 80 points.

Katie Nuttall [00:00:50]:

Okay. So talk me through that process. Obviously, I say obviously, everybody's B Corp journey is unique to them. But at some point, somebody within a business will go, actually, B Corp sounds like our thing. What's the next step? What what's that move that you make then to start that journey into becoming B Corp certified?

Brad Handel [00:01:15]:

Yeah. So for us, it was really driven by our CEO, Jerry Chesser, in which he decided that this was something that Everyman Jack wants to pursue. We put together a committee, and that committee was made up of key people from different departments that helped oversee each of the 5 areas within the b corp certification. And from there, we we hit the ground running. And each person, you know, had their list of to dos of of what to look at and where we can improve or we can continue doing certain things. And also noting that as our business scales, you know, different focus shifts between the different categories too.

Katie Nuttall [00:01:51]:

I think something that's really useful for people to know is that actually that, BIA, the assessment tool, if you like, is a free tool. It's not something that you necessarily have to pay to use. You can almost go in and just try it out. So is that something that you did before you really sort of created those to do lists?

Brad Handel [00:02:10]:

We used that tool early on in the process to get an assessment of where we are, to make sure that this made sense for us and kinda understand what kind of work was gonna go into this b corp journey and how long of a, you know, a lead time we need to give ourselves to do it realistically.

Katie Nuttall [00:02:25]:

And my last question to you on this subject then, Brad, is how can how best to prepare yourself for that B Corp

Brad Handel [00:02:35]:

journey? Wow. Big question. I I would just say I was gonna say be prepared. It's a big journey, and it's gonna take a lot of work, and you're you're gonna need to be flexible and creative. One thing that I I feel like we could have done more is reach out to more local b corp partners and just said, hey. What's up? You know, you're we're in the same area. Can we go grab coffee? Can we talk about your experience? And what did you learn and how to apply that to our journey? Because now being within the b corp community, we've made a lot of contacts and and friends with local businesses that are also b's.
